Cannonball Run Aquathon

July 17, 2019

Best way to describe this is FLAT!

The swim will be in the spring fed lake which is a clean, clear lake Team ATP has used for years as their teams practice venue for open water.

The run course is around the lake and a quick section out of the park and back so again flat. This will use the paved park path as well as crushed limestone and blacktop.

Transition Area

This will be a flagged transition area, basically just a place to set your gear, towel, etc. A big rectangle area, first come, first serve find you piece of grass and claim it. This area as with all events we host will be off limits to friends and family members. This is for your safety, their safety, and there is to much gear in this area to have others milling about. So please do not bring friends or family into the transition area for any reason.

Run In from swim and Run Out to the run course will have a flagged chute opposite each other. Obviously the Run In will be on the water side and Run Out on the parking lot side.

Team ATP / nor 3 Disciplines will be responsible for lost or misplaced gear, keys, phones, etc. PLEASE make sure your gear is labeled with your name on it. Especially wetsuits, most are black these days so make sure it is labeled with your name on it.

Swim: 500m or 1.5k

This will be a Time Trial start. This will ensure everyone has an enjoyable, stress-free swim in order to work on your open water swim technique properly.

Approximately 6:45pm depending on registration numbers we will get everyone over to the gate to the dock. At this point a support crew volunteer will begin seeding the 1500m swimmers. We will seed based on your 1500m swim time. This will begin at 20:00 and go every 2 minutes from that point. This is your ACTUAL 1500m swim time, not what you think you can swim, not what you dream of swimming but your actual 1500m swim time. If you do not know or have a 1500m swim time, take your 500m time, x 3 and add 3 minutes to that.

Behind that group we will start seeding the 500m swimmers, this will be based on your 100m swim time. Again what you actually swim 100m in.

During this time we will go through a course meeting for safety protocol and any course logistic things we need to mention. First swimmer will enter the water at 7:00pm and each 5 seconds after that off of the dock.

You will follow the buoys around the course keeping them on your RIGHT. 1500m swimmers will have 2 loops. 500m swimmers will follow triangle buoys.

Wetsuit Rule
Water 80 and above will be NO WETSUITS! Speed suits are not wetsuits. A “shortie” suit, open arms and legs above the knees will be allowed to 82. This is the ONLY exception.

Swim Safety Protocol
If you need assistance raise your hand a guard will come to you. If you insist on being extracted the guard will signal to the park boat for retraction and retrieval and you will be taken to shore where you will be checked out by the EMT on site before you are released.  You may hang on to the lifeguard board as long as you wish, but you may not proceed forward.

Run: 5K or 1.5mi

You will start exiting the Transition Area up following a crushed limestone park path next to the parking lot. This will take you out of the park to Shust Road. Following that out to the sidewalk bringing you up to Barnard. From there you will head into the curb lane coming back past the park to the dead end at the highway. Turning around there and heading back into the park at the park exit. From there you will follow the fence line along the parking lot, onto the park path to the opposite side of the lake all the way to the dead end there. Turning around and coming back to the pavilion where you will perform a down to the lake, up to the parking lot, and back down to the lake in the finish chute. This Z at the end of the course will give you a 5k and provide a great vantage point for friends, family and spectators with the last 3 tenths of a mile performed right at the pavilion. REMEMBER this is a Time Trial start, so you will never know where you are on the course which means you are racing the clock. Taking it easy through the final Z of the course could mean several spots in the overall standings.

Sprint athletes will follow the same course, at the split just before the trail sprint athletes will make a quick LEFT / RIGHT into the finish line for 1.5mi.

Aid stations will be at the sprint/long course split.

Course markings will be chalk.

The Scene

Cannonball Run presented by Burt Watson Chevrolet

The man made William H. Haithco Recreation Area is a 76-acre public park in Saginaw Charter Township, Michigan maintained by the Saginaw County Parks and Recreation Commission. Conveniently  located adjacent to I-675 at the Tittabawassee road exit  will provide the venue for this Swim – Run Aquathon. This lake was made when the construction of the 675 bypass finished and created a naturally spring fed clear lake which Saginaw Parks and Recreation turned into a great county park. Team ATP of the Saginaw area has brought us in to host this 3 aquathon event series. We have developed two great courses for both the veteran swimmer/runner multi-sport athlete as well as a perfect event for the new multi-sport athlete that may not be ready for a long distance.

If you need to work on the open water swim, if you need to get more comfortable in the open water this was designed with you in mind. Few multi-sport athletes can say they don’t need work in that area. The veterans can use this as a great brick workout to wake up the legs after a weekend of racing to get ready for the upcoming weekend of racing or just to work on specific areas like transition, all in a great park suited perfectly for an event like this.

Again we are very proud to serve as the official event management for TEAM ATP’s Cannonball Run Aquathon at Saginaw’s Hiathco Park.
